The Relationship of Self-Esteem and Anxiety of Mothers with Handicapped Children


Abstract
This study explored the relationships between self-esteem and anxiety of mothers with handicapped children.
The purpose was to contribute to theoretical understanding of the relationships among these two variables and eventually to the planning of nursing care to enhance the life of mothers with handicapped children.
Data were collected from July 21 to August 8, 1994 at three handicapped children¢¥s private institutes in Daejeon.
The subjects were 63 mothers with handicapped children.
Anxiety was measured by Zung¢¥s Self-rating Anxiety Scale and Self-esteem by Rosenberg¢¥s Self-esteem Scale.
The data were analyzed by an S.A.S computerized program and included percent ages, frequency, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results of this study are summarized;
1) The total mean score for self-esteem and anxiety of mothers with handicapped children was 27.14, and 40.84 respectively.
2) There were only significant differences according to mother¢¥s education(P;.01) and occupation(P<.05) between self-esteem and general characteristics of mothers with handicapped children. Also, there were only significant differences according to mother¢¥s education(P<.05), sex of children(P<.05), and children¢¥s duration of special education(P<,0l) between anxiety and general characteristics of mothers with handicapped children.
3) There were significant correlation in the relationship between self-esteem and anxiety of mothers with handicapped children(r=-0.5986, P<.001).
